The versatility of lactobacilli in one product.
The bacterial genus Lactobacillus is one of the most important and best-known producers of lactic acid.
This ensures an optimal environment in the intestine, as it makes it much more difficult for unwanted bacteria and other microbes to colonize. However, some members of this genus also have other properties that benefit us - such as lactose utilization.
Lactose intolerance is a relatively common food intolerance: in Europe alone, an estimated 28% of the population is affected. Inadequate lactose utilization can literally spoil the enjoyment of dairy products by causing bloating and discomfort in those affected.
What is the reason for this? If people lack the enzyme lactase - whether genetically or due to age - the lactose cannot be broken down in the small intestine and passes undigested into the large intestine. There it is then broken down by the intestinal bacteria into two simple sugars, which results in the binding of water on the one hand and the production of gases on the other. This also causes the typical symptoms: flatulence accompanied by liquid stools.

The live microorganisms are in powder form in capsules that consist of an enteric coating. They should therefore easily survive the gastric station. Acid and enzymes are produced during digestion, which the microbes would find difficult to survive. To be absolutely sure that the capsules arrive undamaged in the intestine, it is advisable to take them 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. The recommended daily dose is one capsule per day.
