The bacterial genus Lactobacillus is one of the most important and best-known producers of lactic acid. This ensures an optimal environment in the intestine,  as it makes it much more difficult for undesirable bacteria and other microbes to colonise. However, some representatives of this genus also have other properties that benefit us - such as lactose utilisation. Lactose intolerance is a relatively common food intolerance: in Europe alone, an estimated 28% of the population is affected. Poor lactose utilisation can literally ruin the enjoyment of dairy products by causing bloating and discomfort in sufferers.

What is the reason for this? When people lack the enzyme lactase - whether genetically or due to age - the lactose cannot be broken down in the small intestine  and it passes undigested into the large intestine. There, the intestinal bacteria break it down into two simple sugars, which results in the binding of water and the production of gases. This is how the typical symptoms come about: flatulence accompanied by liquid stool.

The living microorganisms are in powder form in capsules, which consist of an enteric-coated shell. Therefore, they should survive the station in the stomach without further ado. During digestion, acid and enzymes are produced that the microbes would have difficulty surviving. To be absolutely sure that the capsules reach the intestines undamaged, it is advisable to take them 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. The recommended daily dose is one capsule a day. Microencapsulation
The use of gastric juice-resistant capsule shells (DRCaps) and the use of microencapsulated bacterial strains ensures resistance to gastric and bile juices and, as a result, a high level of survival for the bacterial cultures used.
